Kathy Petronchak is the Director of IRS Practices and Procedure at alliantgroup and is part of the alliantnational group in Washington, DC. In this role, she serves as an invaluable resource on a wide range of issues related to IRS procedures, such as foreign bank account reporting, alternative dispute resolution; statute of limitations; account problems, and penalty issues. She also assists in representing clients before the IRS with an examination or appeal issue.
Prior to joining alliantgroup in December 2013, Kathy had 29 years’ experience in directing IRS compliance activities and 5 years of experience at a Big Four firm providing tax controversy services. Her experience at IRS included serving as the Commissioner of the Small Business/Self–Employed Division (SB/SE); where she was responsible for overseeing IRS audits and collection activity of small and mid-sized businesses. She also served as Chief of Staff to the IRS Commissioner and help several executive positions in the Large and Mid-Size Business Division where she was responsible for audits of large taxpayers and programs relating to abusive tax shelters and technical advisors within the Division.

RECENT PROJECTS:
Assisted multiple numbers of clients in determining FBAR filing requirements and helping to remediate the situation. This included advisory services as well as responses to IRS exams related to entity or signature authority filing requirements.
Assisted in resolving an employment tax liability in excess of $1 million. Client had payments applied to incorrect tax years and accounts resulting in large penalties also being assessed. Reviewed account and obtained penalty relief from agent upon presenting facts of case.
Participated in fast track meeting used to resolve a credit issue under exam by IRS. Client was a communications company that had filed claims and original returns with credits that were being disallowed by IRS. Resolved with over 70% of the credits being allowed.
PUBLICATIONS:
Kathy has authored multiple presentations and continuing education seminars on topics designed to assist clients in resolving IRS disputes. She has written articles for the Journal of Tax Practice and Procedure and the Tax Adviser.
